Don't let the name fool you - 'Mid Century Modernism'

Don’t let the name fool you. ‘Mid-century Modernism’ is both an architectural movement and furniture style that has truly stood the test of time and is currently proving more popular than ever.

Characterized by flat roof lines, vertical wood siding, floor-to-ceiling windows, and open-plan spaces with a focus on indoor-outdoor connections, it seems only natural that Australians in particular are embracing the style once again. But rather than just replicate the exact designs from the mid 1900s, Australians appear to be putting their own unique spin on these key architectural elements to create a fresh new look with a distinctly coastal feel.

The colour palette is all about crisp whites mixed with warmer neutrals (like soft beiges and browns) and natural greens to achieve an airy, relaxed, minimal aesthetic that helps create a sense of calm, comfort and a connection with nature.

When it comes to choosing the right white for your space, for rooms lacking in natural light, you will want to choose a cooler white to brighten the room. Conversely, you should consider a warmer white for brighter, larger spaces to balance the amount of sunlight which will have a cooling effect on the colour.

Both the original design movement and its newest iteration rely heavily on wood elements. Light and warmer wood tones are best for creating a modern, natural and coastal vibe.

Whether you decide to go with laminate, Bamboo or engineered timber floors make sure to select a light, warm wood species like a natural oak or an Australian blackbutt.

For bathrooms floors and any other tiled area stick with large format limestone or concrete tile in a warm neutral tone like beige, ivory or warm greys. Both wall and floor tile should be laid in a grid or straight-stacked pattern typical of the mid-century modern style.

To keep in line with the relaxed coastal feel it’s recommended to go with a matte or honed finish over a high gloss/polished finish.

Lastly, modernism is all about form following function so whether you’re buying vintage, new or a mix of both, make sure to go for minimal style furniture, and look to add touches of cane or rattan to up the beachy vibes. Look to iconic brands like Knoll for inspiration.
